1.What is a Hydropower Station Gantry Crane?

Hydropower Station Gantry Crane is a type of heavy-duty lifting equipment specifically designed and manufactured for use in hydroelectric power stationsdams, and hydropower facilities.


2. Where does it work? (Locations)

Unlike general-purpose cranes, it is typically installed in two core locations:

Dam Crest: On top of the dam, traveling along rails on the dam face.

Powerhouse: Inside the hall where the turbine-generator units are installed, or in an open area above the powerhouse.

3. What does it do? (Core Functions)

Its main task is to handle the unique heavy equipment of a hydropower station with ease and precision:

Gate Hoisting: This is the most critical task. It is responsible for lifting and lowering the massive gates used to control water flow (such as intake emergency gates, maintenance gates, and tailrace gates). This requires an extremely high lifting height (from the dam crest to the riverbed) and immense pulling force (traction).

Trash Rack Cleaning: Water intakes have trash racks to prevent debris from entering. This crane can lift grabs or cleaning machines to clear clogged branches, garbage, and other floating debris.

Turbine Maintenance and Installation: Inside the powerhouse, it is used to lift and dismantle massive turbine runners, generator stators, head covers, and other core components for routine inspection and repair.

Valve Handling: It handles the giant butterfly valves or spherical valves at the entrance of the penstock (water pipeline).

4.What are its characteristics? (Technical Features)

High Lifting Height: While a normal crane might only need to lift a few meters, a hydropower crane may need to lower its hook dozens or even hundreds of meters underwater.

Heavy Lifting Capacity: Turbine-generator components are extremely heavy. Single-hook lifting capacities often reach several hundred tons.

Weather & Corrosion Resistance: Cranes operating on the dam crest are exposed year-round to wind, rain, moisture, and water mist. Therefore, they feature special anti-rust and protective designs.

Precision & Safety: When lifting core equipment, precise inching control is required. They must also be equipped with multiple safety devices to prevent accidental gate drops.


The dam top floodgate gantry crane is mainly used for hydraulic equipment transport, installation and maintenance of hydroelectric generating units such as floodgates, trash rack etc.

Model MQ gantry crane can be divided into two kinds: unidirectional crane and bidirectional crane. The unidirectional hoist is fixed on the gantry frame. The Gantry runs along the track on the dam. And its service zone is a line, which can only be used to lift a gate of the same row, while the double direction gantry crane is with a trolley running perpendicular to the crane traveling. Thus, the double direction gantry crane can lift the floodgate or trash racks of different rows of upstream side and the downstream side.


Features of Dam Floodgate Gantry Crane: 

1. Steel plate or box-type girder, electric driving motor of lifting mechanism, gear reducing hoist; 2. The operating mechanism of the crane is driven by the motor, and the closed operating room is mounted on the frame; 3. Running buffer device and windproof rail clamp are equipped under the gantry leg; 4. The spreader moves up and down along the gate slot or around the hinge of the gate; 5. The opening and closing of the gate in the movable water is related to the size of the load and the water hydrodynamic pressure; 6. For large span gate, it needs double lifting points and keep synchronization; 7. Large Lifting capacity, low speed, low work level, generally not more than 4 m / min, only for some quick gate, it can reach 10-14 m / min;
